Bridge Magazine, a project of The Center for Michigan, a 501(c)3 nonprofit “think-and-do” tank, seeks a dynamic journalist with proven expertise in covering Michigan policy and life to serve as a reporter/writer on our growing staff.
This is a full-time position featuring competitive salary, bonus structure and benefits based on the successful candidate’s experience. (UPDATE: The application deadline is less than two weeks away.)
The reporter could be based in the Metro Detroit, Grand Rapids or Lansing regions.

Bridge strives to serve as an independent, nonprofit source of high-quality, credible public affairs journalism. The online magazine, published twice a week, focuses on original news coverage on the big-picture, statewide policy issues that matter most to Michigan’s future, including economic growth, education, public sector accountability and reforms, safety net, the Great Lakes and our state’s other natural resources.
We invest in the time and expert reporting necessary to cover issues in-depth, break new ground and bring new policy problems to the attention of the public and decision-makers.
Bridge is a new approach to journalism and seeks a reporter who can write with flair and find the non-traditional angles to stories that will capture readers’ attention. We don’t cover press conferences; we aim to spark press conferences.
We seek a reporter who will develop a following based on the depth of knowledge and quality of analysis and story-telling presented in the magazine. We want someone who can put a human face on an analysis of tax policy one week — and reveal the policy issues behind a homeless shelter the next.
The winning candidate will have an innovative and entrepreneurial spirit. Bridge is weeks old and we maintain the fast pace of a start-up company. It will not be good enough for the reporter to simply produce good journalism and send it out to the public. A reporter must produce top-flight work, market the work and advocate for the policy changes suggested by the journalism.

Know that if I didn’t live in northern Michigan and very rusty journalist after years of management at age 61, I would be applying for this 21st century journalism opportunity in a second! This is a chance to really make a difference, especially working the “Bridge” team of real pros. led by Phil Power, John Bebow and Derick Melot. You could not do better in Michigan.

I would encourage you to consider two or three part-time writers – so that more diversity of view-point and location might be the result. That way, with a group of “contributing writers” – you might have a much stronger choice of articles.
Of course, a ‘contributing writer’ on an occasional basis could also be a real plus for the publication. I’d be interested in that — and, given my broad experience in several areas – I think I would be a plus for Bridge. I’m not, however, interested in a full time job!
