Needy families who kept their cash assistance after last fall’s massive welfare reform shouldn’t get too comfortable. Almost 500 more families per month are projected to lose cash assistance during the second year of reform, which begins in October of this year.
According to Gov. Rick Snyder’s budget proposal released Thursday at the Capitol, 7,130 families will be kicked off welfare in the 2012-13 fiscal year, because the families will have reached the 48-month lifetime limit on cash assistance.
To date, between 11,000 and 16,000 families have been removed from the dole since the lifetime cap went into effect in October, 2011.
