Michigan drivers are paying more for gas than they have all year, an average of $3.76 per gallon for regular unleaded gas and $4.68 for premium.
Prices have gone up 9 cents in the last week, and 26 cents in the last month, according to AAA.
The state’s average is slightly lower than the national average, $3.83 per gallon of regular gas. Still, Michigan motorists are paying an average of $56.40 to fill 15-gallon tanks.

“Tightening gasoline (inventory) alongside higher crude oil prices had been the main reasons for the increases we’ve seen over the past few weeks,” AAA spokesperson Adrienne Woodland told Bridge Michigan in an email.
The recent heatwave in the United States also impacted production in the Gulf Coast region, she said.
U.S. demand for gasoline slightly decreased from 8.94 million to 8.84 million barrels per day, according to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration. But total domestic gasoline inventory increased by 1.5 million barrels to 219.1 million.
“Gas prices across Michigan continue to rise, reaching the highest prices so far this year,” Woodland said. “Lower gas demand amid increasing supply will likely help to slow price increases.”
When inflation is taken into account, gas prices may not be as expensive as they seem. In 2011, a gallon of gas averaged $3.57, the same buying power as $4.95 in 2023.

- Flint: $3.72 per gallon
- Grand Rapids/Muskegon/Holland: $3.74
- Traverse City: $3.75
- Lansing/East Lansing: $3.75
- Saginaw/Bay City/Midland: $3.76
- Metro Detroit: $3.76
- Jackson: $3.77
- Benton Harbor: $3.77
- Marquette $3.78
- Ann Arbor: $3.82
