• Unemployment recipients in Michigan must report three work search activities for each week, up from one
  • The reporting change will be phased in based on each claimant’s certification schedule
  • The new work search requirement is part of bipartisan legislation signed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer last year

Beginning Sunday, Michiganders receiving unemployment benefits will need to report three work search activities for each week instead of one to remain eligible for benefits.

The requirement is part of bipartisan legislation signed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer last year that overhauled Michigan’s unemployment system, including increasing the maximum number of weeks a person can receive benefits from 20 to 26. The law also increases the maximum weekly unemployment benefit from $530 to $614 beginning Jan. 1.

Here’s what you need to know.

What if I don’t complete all of the work-search activities?

To continue receiving biweekly unemployment benefits, you must report that you completed three valid work-search activities each week. Failing to meet the requirement will result in a loss of benefits.

When will I need to start reporting three work-search activities?

To get benefits, recipients have to complete a questionnaire every two weeks and add details for each job search they’ve conducted, like the employer’s name, job title, the date and method of contact.

The requirement for three searches will be phased in based on when you are expected to report.

  • If you are expected to report the week of July 19, you will report one work search activity for the weeks of July 5 and July 12.
  • If you report the week of July 26, you will have to certify one work search activity for the week of July 12 and three work search activities for the week of July 19.
  • Thereafter, recipients will have to report three work searches for each week.

What types of work-search activities are considered ‘valid?’

Valid work search activities include applying for jobs online or in person, attending job fairs and participating in job search workshops or seminars.

Activities that do not count include applying for the same job more than once within a month, simply browsing or searching online job postings without submitting an application or completing another qualifying activity.

Where do I report my job searches?

Claimants should continue reporting their work search activities through the Michigan Web Account Manager. (MiWAM).

When will unemployment benefits increase?

Beginning Jan. 1, the maximum weekly unemployment benefit will increase from $530 to $614.
