We have a choice this year to break from the longtime practice of secrecy and pork payouts. It’s a dramatic choice. Pork or progress.
Guest Commentary
At Bridge, we believe in listening to voices from all over our state. Got something to say? Contact us and join the conversation (details below)
How to submit a Guest Commentary
What to know:
Bridge welcomes a diversity of voices and perspectives from readers on issues important to Michigan. Guest commentaries reflect the views of the author(s), and are independent of the nonpartisan, fact-driven reporting of Bridge’s newsroom staff.
Commentaries must be the author’s original work and preferably will not have appeared first in other publications. Bridge reserves the right to decline submissions at our discretion.
We reserve the right to edit commentary for grammar, clarity, brevity or to address legal or factual concerns. We may offer editing suggestions, but in the service of making your work more accessible, not to alter your views.
We do not pay for guest commentary.
Here are some guidelines:
- Columns are usually 500-700 words
- They generally focus on a Michigan topic or policy and should avoid ad hominem attacks
- The more direct, distinct and/or intimate your perspective, the more effective your column will be
- The best columns do more than identify problems; they also offer solutions and facts to back them up
- Please include a one- or two-sentence bio, including the writer’s organization or relevant background.
- Authors must show their work, by backing up facts with links to reports or studies
- Bridge does not publish self-promotional columns or candidate endorsements
- Send a good quality, large headshot of the writer(s) as an attachment
- We also ask that, in return for publishing a guest commentary, the author(s) and their organizations generously promote the link to the published column through your Facebook, Twitter and other social or professional networks.
That’s about it. Keep the writing clear, conversational and free of jargon, and sell our smart and receptive readership on the argument you are trying to make.
Who to contact:
Email your submission or idea to guestcommentary@bridgemi.com. Please briefly describe who you are and what you would like to say and put the words “guest commentary” in the email subject line.
Opinion | Michigan’s universities drive economic prosperity. Keep the engines running
Kneecapping our state universities by restricting or cutting off research funding is a destructive and senseless act of self-sabotage.
Opinion | Smartphones don’t belong in schools
Michigan should enact a ban like New York state’s: no smartphones at school from bell-to-bell. We shouldn’t ask our children to resist technology that’s so addictive many adults can’t pull themselves away.
Opinion | Use opioid settlement funds where they can save lives — in our jails
These funds were secured to repair the damage caused by the opioid crisis and there is no more effective way to do that than by helping people enter recovery and stay there.
Opinion | Michiganders should decline to sign anti-voter ballot petition
These proposals will do nothing to actually make elections more secure, and instead, they will prevent eligible voters from participating in our elections.
Opinion | What Michigan needs in its next superintendent of public instruction
This is one of the most consequential decisions Michigan’s State Board of Education will make in a decade. We urge the board to select a leader who is bold, transparent, and unwavering in their commitment to the children who have for too long been overlooked.
Opinion | Michigan lawmakers should take time to craft the best school aid deal
Getting a good deal is more important than a fast deal for our Michigan children in the upcoming state budget.
Opinion | Michigan has tools to ease medical debt. Does it have the will?
Medical debt is a public health issue, and Michigan should enlist Community Health Workers to help residents navigate a system designed to confuse.
Opinion | Mandatory overtime at Michigan prisons pushing workers to the edge
Michigan needs real solutions, including hazard pay, rather than policies that steal corrections workers from their families.
Opinion | Don’t let TikTok be your child’s only sex ed teacher
We know that some elected officials still worry that comprehensive sex education is not popular with constituents. This is untrue. It is long past time to update Michigan’s sex and health education standards.
