  • Republican U.S. Rep. Lisa McClain faces Democrat Clinton St. Mosley in Michigan’s 6th Congressional District
  • The district is solidly Republican, with local voters backing Donald Trump over Joe Biden by 30 percentage points in 2020
  • McClain, St. Mosley but ran unopposed in the Aug. 6 primary

LANSING — Republican U.S. Rep. Lisa McClain appears to be a heavy favorite for re-election in Michigan’s 9th Congressional District but faces a general election challenge from Democrat Clinton St. Mosley.

The district is mostly located in Michigan’s Thumb area and includes all of Huron, Salinac and St. Clair counties, as well as parts of Tuscola, Lapeer, Oakland and Macomb counties.

Major cities include Milford, St. Clair, Port Huron, Lapeer and Caseville.

McClain, now serving her second term in the U.S. House, easily won the district in 2022. She beat a Democratic challenger by roughly 30 percentage points to win re-election that year.

Voters in the 5th District have reliably backed Republican candidates. Then-President Donald Trump beat Joe Biden by 30 points in 2020, and Trump trounced Democrat Hillary Clinton by just over 33 points in 2016.

McClain and St. Mosley both ran unopposed in the Aug. 6 primary and will square off in the Nov. 5 general election

Here is a closer look at each of the candidates:

Republican - Lisa McClain: First elected to Congress in 2020 and re-elected in 2022, McClain lives in Romeo and has a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Northwood University. She was the founder and president of North End Support Team, an organization assisting Macomb County residents suffering from drug abuse and addiction, prior to jumping into politics. McClain currently serves as Secretary of the U.S. House Republican Conference. In Congress, she has opposed major Democratic priorities, including various spending plans and gun control measures. In early 2021, she voted to overturn election results in Arizona and Pennsylvania, both swing states where Biden had defeated Trump.

Democrat - Clinton St. Mosley: St. Mosley, who filed to run with a Lake Orion address, describes himself as a small business owner and father. He supports "reasonable" gun control measures, additional border security and "workable solutions" for climate change, among other things, according to his campaign website.

Libertarian - Kevin Vayko: Vayko, who lists a Dryden address in campaign filings, was nominated at convention by the Libertarian Party of Michigan. The party advocates for personal liberty over government intervention and considers taxation "theft," according to its platform.

Working Class - Jim Walkowicz: Walkowicz was nominated at convention by the Working Class Party of Michigan. Among other things, the Working Class party argues that financial profits by big companies were "stolen" from workers and should be returned. Walkowicz also ran for the post in 2022 but finished a distant third with less than 2% of the vote.
