Michigan gas prices drop after reaching hitting a 2024 high on Friday
- Michigan gas prices have slightly fallen after they reached a 2024 high of $3.81 on Friday
- As of Monday, gas prices are still 8 cents a gallon higher than they were a week earlier
- The average price for a gallon of regular gas in Michigan is $3.77, compared to the national average of $3.50
Michigan gas prices have been rising and falling over the last few weeks. But prices reached a yearly high on Friday when the average cost for a gallon of regular gas reached $3.81, according to AAA.
Currently, the statewide average for a gallon of regular gas is $3.77, which is 8 cents more than it was last week when the average was $3.69. Gas prices in Michigan have shot up 9 cents over the last month. Nationally, the average price for a gallon of regular gas is $3.50.
"Michigan drivers are seeing much higher prices at the pump as the state average set a new 2024-high on Friday," said Adrienne Woodland, spokesperson for AAA. "Refinery issues in Joliet, Illinois, alongside higher gasoline demand, have led to an increase in gas prices across the upper Midwest."

The price of gasoline has increased as U.S. demand rose unexpectedly from 8.78 million barrels per day on July 12 to 9.46 million a week later, according to the Energy Information Administration. However, domestic gasoline supply declined from 233 million barrels to 227.4 million barrels.
Summer-grade fuel is more expensive to produce and people usually drive more as the weather warms, increasing demand.
Summer-grade gasoline typically contains 2% butane, a colorless, odorless gas that is used in lighter fluid for example. In the winter, gas contains more butane, to help vehicles start up in colder weather.

- Ann Arbor: $3.80
- Benton Harbor: $3.80
- Metro Detroit: $3.70
- Flint: $3.77
- Grand Rapids/Muskegon/Holland: $3.87
- Jackson: $3.88
- Lansing/East Lansing: $3.85
- Marquette $3.47
- Saginaw/Bay City/Midland: $3.85
- Traverse City: $3.77
