  • The department will be led by an interim superintendent for two months after current superintendent Michael Rice retires

The Michigan Board of Education has reached a three-year contract agreement with incoming state Superintendent Glenn Maleyko. The current Dearborn Public Schools superintendent is set to start his new job on Dec. 8.

Sue C. Carnell, chief deputy superintendent at the Michigan Department of Education, will lead the department on an interim basis after current superintendent Michael Rice retires on Oct. 3

Maleyko lives in Canada but has committed to moving to the greater Lansing area. He will be reimbursed for “reasonable moving expenses” if he provides itemized receipts, according to his contract.

The state superintendent is the leader of the Michigan Department of Education and a non-voting chair of the state board.

“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to support children and families, educators, and other school staff at all of Michigan’s public schools,” Maleyko said in a news release.

“From my experience in Dearborn Public Schools and the relationships I have with educators across the state, I know that local districts, the Michigan Department of Education, and the State Board of Education are all strongly committed to doing whatever we can to improve student achievement. We already have much positive momentum—as evidenced by the metrics that track progress to meeting the eight goals in Michigan’s Top 10 Strategic Education Plan—and can do even better working together.”

Compensation

As the new state superintendent, Maleyko will earn $272,000, the maximum amount listed on the job posting
