Interactive graphic: Hipster map of Detroit

The past decade has brought stunning transformation to Detroit’s moribund downtown and midtown areas. Much of the change has drawn plaudits from city boosters and business leaders. But it has also given rise to fears that longtime (often lower-income) residents and businesses in these neighborhoods would be priced out Detroit’s recovery, the downside of gentrification.

This map offers a sampling of key developments in the past decade in and around the city’s business center, notably downtown, Midtown, Corktown and Eastern Market. While decaying neighborhoods across the city await reboots, Detroit’s core is awhirl in rehabbed office space, hotels, lofts and condo units, hipster coffee houses and pubs, and a rejuvenated restaurant scene.
