• John James net work has grown considerably since he began serving in Congress in 2023, largely due to a family business and trusts
  • As he runs for governor, Democrats have used James’ finances to make the case to voters that he’s used Congress to enrich himself
  • The family also owns stock in SpaceX, a company that James has oversight of through a Congressional committee

The Michigan Democratic Party is criticizing Rep. John James over his personal wealth, arguing he’s used his position in the US House to enrich himself and created a conflict of interest by buying shares in Elon Musk’s SpaceX on the day shares were available to the public.

James is worth as much as $50 million and has increased his net worth considerably since joining Congress in 2023, but most of his gains stem from a Detroit-based logistics company his father started, and several stock trades were managed by a related blind trust he said he had no control over.

The claims are among several that Bridge Michigan is reviewing in the state’s gubernatorial race between James, a Republican, and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, a Democrat. The winner will succeed Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who is term-limited.

So what’s true about James’ net worth and stock trading?

The claims

Michigan Democrats have claimed James has seen an “outrageous gain in personal wealth” since he joined the US House. In 2022, he won a narrow victory to represent parts of Macomb and Oakland counties. He was reelected in 2024.

Last week, as part of a “John James: Out for Himself” tour, Benson running mate and Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks argued James’ stock trading raises “serious questions about who he’s actually working for in Congress.”

Alyvia Bailey, a spokesperson for James’ campaign, did not respond to multiple messages seeking comment for this story.

Democrats claimed his wealth grew “in part due to James’ corrupt and unethical stock trading.”

Democrats have also raised conflict-of-interest concerns after James and his wife bought stock in SpaceX, a Musk company with business in the aerospace, space transportation, telecommunications and artificial intelligence fields. James is a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

“While in Congress, John James has been focused on lining his own pockets,” MDP spokesperson Derrick Honeyman said in a statement to Bridge. “ … John James only cares about getting rich, not fighting for the people of Michigan.”

James’ wealth

When he joined Congress, James and his wife were worth between $690,000 and $4.1 million, according to a Bridge review of assets and liabilities in his initial 2022 financial disclosure and subsequent amendments.

James’ annual disclosure report for 2025, which he filed on Aug. 13, shows that he and his wife had a net worth last year between $10.8 million and $50.8 million.

Most of his increased wealth came from family trusts named for his father, John A. James — not stock trades.

Through one of those trusts, James reported a related ownership stake in the James Group Inc. family business worth between $5 million and $25 million. He listed between $1 million and $5 million in dividends from that holding. James worked for the family logistics company in between his time in the military and Congress. He stepped down before taking office in 2023.

Stock holdings in the family trusts were valued at between $750,000 and $1.75 million.

Candidates and members of Congress are not required to provide exact values of assets, holdings or liabilities, but only a range for the value. The financial disclosures for all candidates and members are available online.

Outside of the family trusts and business, James and his wife were worth between $1.5 million and $3.3 million as of last year. Most of that was in bank accounts. They had up to $1.1 million in stocks, primarily mutual funds.

James’ stock trades

James reported hundreds of stock trades in 2023 and 2024, including 145 trades that he failed to disclose within the 45 days that’s required under federal law, the Detroit News reported in 2024.

In a September 2024 letter submitted to the US House Clerk’s Office, James wrote that while preparing his 2023 annual report, his attorneys “uncovered a number of stocks purchased in November 2023 by a trust that functions as a blind trust.”

He added that he and his wife had “no control over” the trust and didn’t have knowledge of or initiate any of the trades, and that he then had his legal team review trust assets included in previous disclosures.

That review “identified several errors in historic reports, entirely due to oversight by the accountants who manage my family’s assets and who prepared the previous reports,” James wrote.

SpaceX

James’ most recently disclosed stock purchase has also been used by Democrats as campaign material against him, saying it raises conflict of interest questions given his role on the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

The committee has jurisdiction over the FCC and telecommunications issues involving SpaceX’s Starlink business. But it does not oversee Space Force contracts that account for much of SpaceX’s federal business, including billion-dollar space data and threat-detection awards announced in May.

In July, James disclosed a June 12 purchase of between $15,001 and $50,000 of stock in Musk’s SpaceX, which went public that day. The public offering had been previously announced and widely reported

James was one of four members of Congress who sit on committees that regulate SpaceX and who bought its stock, according to NOTUS, a Washington, D.C.-based newsroom that covers government and politics.

A spokesperson for James told NOTUS that James’ wife purchased the stock for their children “through a brokerage firm, like other members of the public were welcome to do,” and bought the stock because their children are “excited about space exploration.”

The STOCK Act, passed in 2012, requires members of Congress to disclose their stock trades and set new penalties on members who used information for insider trading. It also set the 45-day disclosure window James violated in 2024, but it does not bar lawmakers from buying or selling stocks.

James is far from the only millionaire in Congress. NOTUS reported that at least 73 out of 100 sitting US Senators have a median net worth of more than a million dollars. A 2020 analysis found many US House members were millionaires too.

The bottom line

James’ net worth has increased significantly in the years since he joined the US House in 2022. The majority of that increase came from assets tied to family trusts and his family business, not individual stocks.

James has made hundreds of stock trades during his time in Congress, including 145 that weren’t reported within the mandatory timeframe. James attributed that failure to accountants who manage his family’s assets and prepared the reports.

James sits on the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, which has oversight of industries that Musk’s SpaceX operates in but not recent federal Space Force contracts. The federal STOCK Act does not bar him or other members of Congress from buying or owning stock, and at least three other members who have oversight of the company also purchased stock.
