Bridge Magazine seeks reporter to cover healthcare, mental health issues in Michigan
Bridge Magazine seeks an enterprising, versatile and knowledgeable reporter to launch a new Michigan Health Watch and Mental Health Watch beat for our award-winning, nonpartisan, nonprofit publication.
You will join a growing, talented team in a state overflowing with news, from the cities of Detroit, Grand Rapids, Flint and Marquette to the farms, coasts and rural corners of northern Michigan. Policymakers are wrestling with such issues as Medicaid expansion and work rules, high rates of obesity, disability, infant mortality, STDs and opioid addiction, as well as medical facility consolidations, closings and expansions. Michigan also possesses world-class research facilities which regularly churn out newsworthy innovations.
Your beat will include an array of public health trends, the intersection of public policy, consumers and health professions as well as mental health issues. We will cover the wider industry as well, from the business of healthcare, to quality and access to care, to best practices and challenges in health professions, to watchdogging the industry and the government agencies which oversee it.
We want a writer who can explain complex topics in an engaging way, always with an eye for the human impact. You will mix breaking news with larger enterprise, efficiently turned. Sourcing is critical; a candidate should be comfortable chatting up hospital executives, doctors and legislative staffers, but also factory workers, people struggling with substance abuse and Medicaid patients. And we seek a great colleague; a journalist who is collaborative and generous.
