- The fun started when we were overwhelmed by the response of a playlist of iconic Michigan songs
- Winners of the league get amazing Bridge swag
Bridge Michigan readers, you helped create an awesome Ode to Michigan playlist. Now, are you ready to keep the good times rolling with a friendly Michigan music competition?
After Bridge compiled a list of 25 iconic Michigan songs in January, we were overwhelmed by the enthusiasm of readers, who helped grow the playlist to more than 85 songs that spanned genres from folk and bluegrass to punk and techno.
Now, we are introducing Bridge Michigan’s Ultimate Michigan Music League via Spotify.
Spotify’s Music League is a social music competition platform where friends create weekly themed playlists, submit one song each that fits the theme, and then vote and award points to their favorite submissions from other players, creating an ongoing friendly competition centered around music discovery and sharing.
Here's how our Music League will work:
How do I play? Fill out this Google form with your name, email address and hometown and we will send you a link to join our league. We will only have a maximum of 100 spots available, so sign up quickly. You will have a week to sign up before the league kicks off on Feb. 24.

How many rounds are there? There are seven rounds with a different playlist theme (like "Best Song to Play at a Wedding" or "Songs That Make You Cry") each round.
How long do I have to submit a song and vote? Everyone gets five days to submit one song that fits the theme, then all players have five days to vote on their favorites.
How do the points work? Each participant can award up to five points to their top picks with a total of 25 points per round. For instance, if there are 20 songs submitted in a round, you have 25 points to use as you wish with no song getting more than 5 points.
What are the rules around voting? Well for one, you can't vote for your own song. No one wants to game the system and, even if you do, what fun would that be? More importantly, if you don’t submit a song or don’t vote, even if you submitted a song, you won’t get any points. The whole point is sharing songs and rewarding others for their great song selection, so don’t forget to submit and to vote.
Is there a winner of Music League? You bet there is! At the end of each round, points are tallied and people move up/down the rankings. After all the rounds are completed and tallied, the person with the most votes across all seven rounds wins. Some leagues play for stakes, others just for bragging rights. You will play for Bridge Michigan swag!
Why play Music League? The fun comes from discovering new music through friends and debating why certain songs deserve votes. Plus, you end up with awesome themed playlists at the end of each round.
Do I need a Spotify account to play? Yes, but it can be either a free account or a subscription - and you can access Music League through a web browser or the Music League app.
Again, we are going to have seven rounds with each theme meant to prompt a Michigan-focused song or artist. May the best mitten music lover win!
