Secretary of State candidates to debate at U-M; Bridge to moderate with Gongwer

Garlin Gilchrist II and Anthony Forlini will debate for one hour Oct. 8 at the University of Michigan

Secretary of State candidates will gather for a one-hour debate Oct. 8 at the University of Michigan’s Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy, with Bridge Michigan serving as the lead media and editorial partner.

The debate between Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist II, a Democrat, and Republican County Clerk Anthony Forlini is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Annenberg Auditorium at the Ford School’s Weill Hall in Ann Arbor.

Bridge Michigan will stream the event live on Bridgemi.com. Capitol reporter Jordyn Hermani will serve as the lead moderator and be joined by co-moderator Zach Gorchow, the president of Gongwer Michigan. Gongwer, a news service, is also an event sponsor.

Student representatives of the Michigan College Democrats and Michigan College Republicans will also pose questions to the candidates.

The debate, as of now, is the only confirmed one for major party candidates vying to succeed term-limited Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, a Democrat who is running for governor. The election is Nov. 3.

“The work of the Secretary of State’s office touches all Michiganders and we look forward to hearing from the two candidates about their visions for the next four years,” said Celeste Watkins-Hayes, the Joan and Sanford Weill dean of Public Policy at the Ford School.

The debate is the same night as a US Senate debate in Grand Rapids between Abdul El-Sayed, a Democrat, and former US Rep. Mike Rogers, a Republican.
