Enrollment-based reimbursement provides the stability child-care providers need to operate. Attendance-based reimbursement does not. No other small business is expected to reserve capacity for a customer while absorbing financial losses every time that customer is absent.
Michigan school opinions
Opinion | Education in Michigan requires transformation, not reform
The governor and Legislature should work together to empanel a nonpartisan blue-ribbon commission with broad representation and a clear mandate: develop a 10-year educational transformation plan for Michigan.
Opinion | Michigan’s school funding system is overdue for a smart update
Michigan is now on the precipice of a transformational moment in how we support students and schools. We urge legislators to build on that momentum by supporting a multiyear transition to weighted student funding as part of the state budget process.
Opinion | Public dollars, public schools. Michigan must reject tax credit vouchers
This voucher program would redirect public resources away from the neighborhood schools that serve every child and toward private institutions that are not held to the same standards of accountability, transparency or commitment to serving all students.
Opinion | Michigan K-12 needs an overhaul. Continuing this way is insane
Educators need to get real: Saying you’re in a good Michigan district is like saying you’re the smartest kid in remedial class. The future depends on acting quickly to reform a system that has allowed others to pass us by.
Opinion | A blueprint to expand child care for Michigan families, providers, employers
Affordability is only part of the challenge. Michigan also faces a significant shortage of available child care. We urge Senators Elissa Slotkin and Gary Peters to support the bipartisan Child Care Modernization Act, which would create new grants to expand supply and capacity.
Opinion | Michigan’s legislators and governor need to pass a K-12 budget now
In an open letter to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Senate Democratic Leader Winnie Brinks and House Speaker Matt Hall, the executive directors of the Michigan Association of Superintendents and Administrators and the Michigan Association of School Boards call for the state to finalize the K-12 education budget without delay.
Opinion | Michigan’s PreK for All program helps our state’s small businesses thrive
Every parent deserves the opportunity to work, every child deserves the support to learn and grow, and Michigan’s small business community depends on a strong, resilient workforce.
Opinion | Michigan scholarship granting organizations poised to support students with disabilities
Scholarships could support tutoring, disability-related supports and services, assistive equipment and more. But only if the governor opts in. These are new federal tax credits that help all K-12 students regardless of where they go to school — public, non-public, or charter.
Opinion | Stewardship over spotlight: Rethinking leadership in a time of turnover
Universities, and many businesses, are not built in a single administration. They are shaped across a continuum of leadership, each generation inheriting both the strengths and unfinished work of those who came before, while responding to a rapidly changing world.
