The best paying jobs remain in the southeastern part of the state with the lowest wages in the sparsely populated portions of northern Michigan.

Two counties, different fates

In 1990, Saginaw and Washtenaw counties had roughly the same average weekly wage, separated by only $7, or $364 a year. By 2013 that gap had grown to more than $12,150 a year.
